Jigging Lures

Guide

CHOOSING YOUR JIG

When it comes to deciding what weight and even what colour jig to go fishing with, there are a number of key variables you need to consider.

1.      Depth of the water you’re fishing in

2.     The strength of the current or tide

3.     The weather

4.     Water clarity

5.     Target species

The main objective is to get your jig to the bottom as fast as possible, while keeping it vertically below you.

The longer your jig takes to get to the bottom, the more likely it is to have drifted as it can get moved by the current or tide, and the boat can get moved by the wind, or current.

If you’re fishing in calm seas with little wind, your jig is less likely to drift; but if the current is strong, then your jig could get pushed all over the place while it’s descending through the water column.

In deeper water you’re more likely to be fishing with a heavier weight jig.

Others use the “double the depth” rule i.e. if you’re fishing in 60m of water (with minimal current) you’d use a 120g jig (or similar). You can increase that to 2.5 x the depth if you’re fishing in a high current area.

So, while there are lots of “rules” you could follow, it’s always best to consider all the variables at play when you’re jigging or doing any other style of fishing.

DEPTH OF THE WATER YOU'RE FISHING IN

The deeper the water, the faster you want your jig to get to the bottom, and a heavier weightedjig will drop faster than a lighter weighted jig.

THE STRENGTH OF THE CURRENT OR TIDE

When there's a strong current running, if your jig isn’t heavy enough, it will get pushed around as it descends through the water column, meaning it may not end up in the right spot.

Ideally you want your jig to be vertically below you when it gets to the bottom. You can use a heavier weight jig to combat the current, or you could cast the jig ahead of you and left it drift back to underneath the boat as it descends.

THE WEATHER

If it’s windy, there is going to be more disturbance on the water, particularly at the top of the water column. It also means your boat will drift and move around more, as you don’t jig at anchor. This is because it's usually too deep to deploy an anchor and drifting allows you to cover more ground to find the fish.

WATER CLARITY

If the water is murky, you’re fishing in rough seas or in low light conditions, consider the size and colour of your jig. Lumo jigs can be more visible in these conditions which is more likely to get the attention of your target.

TARGET SPECIES

Always consider the size of your target species but also think about what baits they like to eat. Jigs that can resemble their preferred bait can help, but also the style of jig – does your target species like to hunt and chase their bait (so a fast-moving jig is recommended) or are they opportunistic feeders (where a slow-moving bait put in front of their face might be better).

JIG STYLES

There are different styles of metal jigs. These are usually broken down into 2 categories – fast jigs and slow jigs.

A fast jig is a jig that you really need work, to ensure the benefit of its action is maximised. Our Knife jigs and Deepwater Slim jigs fall into this category.

They’re easy to deploy, as their slim profile allow it to be dropped almost vertically (if you’re using the right weight), and how much effort you put in on the retrieve will dictate how much movement the jig makes.

Fast jigs are great for kingfish, who love to hunt and chase their prey.

A slow jig is a jig that can catch the same species as a fast jig but you’re retrieving at a slower pace as the design of the jig will naturally create a lot of movement. Our Flutter and Flipper jigs fall into this category.

They can take longer to get to the bottom as the shape of the jigs mean they will move around a lot as they descend through the water column, but this also means that they can be attacked on the drop (as well as on the retrieve) as the movement can be very enticing to different species throughout the water column.

Slow jigs can be ideal for snapper and other similar species, who are more opportunistic feeders and will happily take a free lunch when it’s wafted in front of their face.

DEEPWATER SLIM JIGS

SHAPE AND MOVEMENT

Our Deepwater Slim jigs are a low resistance, long, narrow jig designed for deepwater fishing. These jigs will descend with a slight fluttering action but at a rapid pace which allows you to get to the bottom quickly. Being a narrow profile, you're able to generate both speed and action onthe retrieve without much resistance, making it ideal for vertical jigging.

IDEAL TARGETS

Kingfish and other deepwater species, like bluenose, hapuku and gemfish.

JIG SIZES

Available fully dressed as 200g, 300g and 400g jigs.

KNIFE JIGS

SHAPE AND MOVEMENT

Our Knife jigs are a tail weighted jig, with a wider profile, which creates more resistance and noise in the water. They're available in holographic colours with UV belly strips or stripes for better visibility in deep water. These jigs are designed to drop quickly, tail down, through the water column and then worked fast using a mechnical jigging action. This will make the jig dart side to side on the retrieve. Ideal for short jigging rods and working at a fast speed to allow the jig to dart.

IDEAL TARGETS

Kingfish and other predators looking for a bigger meal.

JIG SIZES

Available fully dressed as 150g, 200g and 300g jigs.

FLUTTER JIGS

SHAPE AND MOVEMENT

Our Flutter jigs are designed to do just as the name suggests - to 'flutter' through the water column. This is due to the uneven profile with a low profile scoop out of one side. Whether fishing slowly with a 'lift and flutter' technique or 'dead sticking', the balance and shape of the jig produces a flutter that's irresistable to shallow water species.

IDEAL TARGETS

Perfectly suited to shallow water fishing (under 50m) and can be fished in the current while drifting. Ideal for targeting everything from trout and mackerel to snapper and kingfish.

JIG SIZES

Available fully dressed as 60g, 80g and 100g jigs.

FLIPPER JIGS

SHAPE AND MOVEMENT

Our slow pitched Flipper jigs are designed for shallowish water. The leaf-shape body has a pronounced scoop on one side which gives the jig its unique movement. Designed to imitate a wounded bait fish, our Flipper jigs fall with a wide and sweeping side-to-side movement and retrieve with an erratic darting action. You can fish these jigs on the drift or at anchor.

IDEAL TARGETS

Ideal for targeting a wide range of species from snapper to kingfish and kahawai/Australian salmon.

JIG SIZES

Available fully dressed as 60g, 80g, 100g, 150g and 200g jigs.

SUNAKKU®

SHAPE AND MOVEMENT

Our Sunakku® jigs are designed for fishing in medium to deep water. We've packed as much lumo and UV content into our jigs as we possibly can, which improves their visibility in deeper water. The customised head creates a turbulant flow of water around it, which creates and enticing wiggle from the free flowing skirts. These jigs can be fished both on the drift or dropping into the current. The head of the lure slides up and down the trace, reducing the fish's ability to use the weight as leverage to shake the hooks.

When fishing with Sunakku® jigs, allow it to descend directly to the sea floor. Once it hits the bottom, immediately start a slow wind, keeping your rod as still as possible. If you start to feel fish biting the skirt, keep winding slowly. The fish will think their "prey" is trying to escape and will attack more aggressively, hooking themself in the process.

If you don't get any bites, wind up about a quarter of the depth you're fishing in, then drop the jig back down to the bottom, and repeat the process.

IDEAL TARGETS

Targeting predatory species, like snapper, in medium to deep water. You can also add thin slivers of bait to further entice your target.

JIG SIZES

The 60g, 80g, 100g and 130g jigs come with a 1/0 hook set and straight skirt. The 200g jig comes with a 2/0 hook set and a curly skirt. You can purchase replacement skirts to switch between straight and curcly skirts if desired.
