Deepwater Slim Jig review

Scott Parry and Mig Rumney from Fishing & Adventure have spent their whole lives on and around the water. Every year they travel all over New Zealand targeting different species, some big and some small, creating New Zealand’s # 1 TV fishing show. They've been proudly using Black Magic gear for years, and know their way around a metal jig.

Perfectly designed

We’ve been targeting kingfish on jigs for well over 15 years, so we feel we’ve got a pretty good understanding of what makes a good jig. Over the last few years, we’ve been having more and more success with the Black Magic Deepwater Slim jigs and on occasions, they've even outfished live bait.

Black Magic’s Deepwater Slim jigs are exactly that – slim in profile and perfectly designed for targeting kingfish over the deep reefs and pinnacles. They descend with a slight fluttering action but at a rapid pace which allows you to get to the bottom quickly and straight into vertically jigging. This is super important as when you’re drifting, you can easily drift off the spot before your jig has even hit the bottom.

The jigs will hook fish both on the drop and on the retrieve but in our opinion it’s on the retrieve when they really come into their own. They have an easily workable action when matched with the correct rod and even jigging a heavy 400g option isn’t as taxing as it could be due to this ergonomic design. They obviously need to attract the fish, and there is a good range of colours and styles to mix things up and get the fish biting.

They’re extremely well rigged and it’s great to be able to grab one straight out of the packet and drop it down knowing the hardware is more than capable of taking on any one of these potentially massive fish.

The Deepwater Slim jig commandeers a good percentage of our tackle box and they have rejuvenated our passion for targeting kingfish on jigs. It can be a somewhat tiresome way of fishing but with the right tools your hook up rate will increase, and there are very few things better than coming up tight on a hard fighting greenback.
