If you’re on the hunt for a thrilling fishing experience, then look no further than the prized Red Gurnard—a true gem of New Zealand waters! While they may not pack the punch of Snapper or Kingfish, these vibrant "carrots of the sea" deliver their own brand of fun, especially when you’re out there on your trusty kayak.
Easy to Reach, Hard to Resist
Red Gurnard can be found lurking in waters from the shore break right out to a whopping 100meters, but here’s the good news for kayak enthusiasts: these beauties are often just a paddle away! Whether you’re stationed along Auckland’s stunning coastlines or exploring the serene bays of Hawkes Bay, depths of 5 to 30 meters are all you need for a successful catch. This means you can conveniently access them from many spots around the country without needing a big boat!
Year-Round Fun!
These fish are available all year long in the North Island and for much of the year in the South. However, spring is the ultimate high season when these fish bulk up after their winter slumber, loaded with roe and seeking the warm shallows. Gear up, because it’s prime time for Gurnard fishing.

Ultimate Kayaking Hotspots
Certain regions are particularly blessed with Gurnard populations, making them the ideal kayak fishing destinations. Your must-visit spots include the beautiful West Coast Harbours of Auckland, the rich waters of Taranaki, the sunny shores of Gisborne, and the stunning landscapes of Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough, and North Canterbury. Paddle just a short distance offshore, drop your lines, and prepare for action!
The Thrill of the Catch
As I glide across the glistening waters, I keep a keen eye on my sounder, scouting out fish signals flashing along the seabed. Once I get a promising mark, it’s time to drop anchor and start the fun! I often use two flasher rigs on lightweight overhead rods—playing with 10 to 15 lb braided line not only hones my sensitivity to gentle bites but also puts up a fun fight when those larger Gurnard decide to join the party.
But here’s a little insider tip: Gurnard are surprisingly aggressive! They’ll come up off the bottom for a nibble just like Snapper. I’ve seen them chase bait nearly 15 meters off the sand! So don’t hesitate to crank that aggression up a notch—you might just walk away with a prize catch!
Kayak vs. Boat: Why Kayak Wins
Why choose a kayak for Gurnard fishing? The quiet approach! Kayaks create far less noise than traditional boats, which keeps fish relaxed and encourages them to feed freely. That peaceful stealth can make all the difference in your fishing success!

Safety First—Stay Warm and Connected
Before you launch into your fishing adventure, safety should be your top priority—especially when the temperatures drop! I always wear a dry suit if the water is below 18 degrees; it provides warmth and comfort while I’m anchored and exposed to the wind. Don't forget to keep your communication gear close at hand—trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!
Delicious Rewards Await
Once you've snagged your catch of Gurnard, you’ll be rewarded with deliciously sweet, flaky white fillets. One of my all-time favorite meals is simply pan-frying them inbutter—delightfully simple yet incredibly tasty. But if you want to elevate your game, try them in panko crumbs served alongside crunchy fried chips. Nothing beats the classic fish and chips!

Enjoy the Journey
Kayak fishing for Gurnard can be as simple or as intricate as you desire, but the essence of it is to simply enjoy the water and keep your bait over the sand in the right hot spots. So, grab your gear, get out there, and let the adventure begin!
