Longreach Surfcasting Rigs

HOW TO FISH

Surfcasting is a landbased style of fishing which is mainly done off the beach, but these days you can find surfcasters in many coastal areas.

Introduced in 2014, our pulley style Longreach Surfcasting rigs are specifically designed to deliver a long, aerodynamic cast to help you reach your target. That may be in the channels running parallel with the beach, or out over the back of the surf to where the fish are holding.

THE DESIGN

Their unique design allows anglers to cast a longer distance because the bait is sitting directly over the sinker. This means that all the weight [of the rig, bait and sinker] is loading at the base of the rig. If your bait was positioned halfway up the trace, it would make the cast or flight less aerodynamic and increase your chances of tangles.

BEFORE YOU CAST

In some places where you’ve got multiple sandbars to clear, having a long distance rig can help you get into the fish zone. We recommend using our Bait Buddy cotton to wrap around your bait. This will not only make them more secure on your rig but improve the aerodynamics to aid flight.

The impact shield doesn’t always have to be used. If you’re fishing in close, the distance may not be your goal. Simply bait up and cast out without needing to fix your hook into the shield.

When you’re fishing in the surf, it’s common to be fishing in murky water. Having the choice of brightly coloured floats can be beneficial, as an added attractant for any hungry fish.

The lumo floats are also a great option when landbased fishing for snapper in the dark, or low light condition. The lumo can be “charged up” with our UV torch before being fished with, to increase its visibility and attractiveness in the water.

THE HOOK UP

The majority of surfcasters place their rod in a rod spike once they've cast their line out into the surf. This is done for a couple of reasons.

  1. The setup is quite heavy to hold for long periods and giving height to your line in surf often means it will clear the breakers close in
  2. This allows you to fish multiple rods at the same time

We use KL recurve hooks on our Longreach Surfcasting rigs as its the hook of choice for many surfcasters. This is because it allows the fish to come in, eat the bait, turn and hook itself as it’s swimming away. When a big fish hits, the rod will simply load itself up. Our KL hook will do what it’s designed to do and roll into the corner of the mouth or jaw of your fish.

If you do like to hold your surfcaster, let the rod load before striking, as this will reduce the chance of pulling the hook out of the mouth of your fish.
