For me one of the most thrilling and delicious fish going around is the Bar Cod, or as the cool kids like to call it, the Banded Rockcod. Get ready for a rip-roaring fishing adventure as we dive deep into the ocean and find out what makes this species a must-target for any self-respecting sports fisherman!
An Aussie Treasure
Imagine you’re out on the deep blue of the East Coast, cruising the continental shelf at a comfortable 100 to 370 meters. Your heart races as you know you’re in the territory of the Bar Cod – a fish that’s not only challenging to catch but an absolute treat for the taste buds!
These hefty beauties can grow up to a whopping 1.6 meters long! When you hook up with one, it’s a powerful battle right from the get-go. You’ve got to hold on tight as they dig deep, fighting like the rockstars they are. If you’ve ever been pulled into the depths, you know the drill – keep the pressure on and steer them away from their home turf, or you might just end up with a busted line and a dent in your fishing pride!

Techniques of the Trade
Now, let’s talk tactics. You want to come prepared, folks. Heavy tackle is the name of the game! We’re talking 80 pound - 13x Hyperglide Braid paired with some industrial-strength leaders – like 100lb Tough trace if you want to be a real legend. Slip on a set of Black Magic KL Hooks in 8/0, and you’re set to battle these deep-sea monsters.
While you’re out there, try your hand at slow-pitch jigging or tossing out large lures.
For jigging Black Magic’s Sunakku® Jigs are lethal and my go-to!
Fresh or live baits work wonders, pulling in Bar Cod when the bites get stubborn. Just remember to let your rod load up! Don’t be that mate who strikes too early. Ease into it, allow the fish to grab the bait, and set that hook for a golden opportunity!
And if you’ve got the right gear, don’t shy away from electric reels – they make the long fight against these deep-dwelling beasts a whole lot easier!
The Thrill of the Fight

So, what’s it like when a Bar Cod takes your bait? Absolute fireworks! Picture this: first strike, and you’re wrestling with something that’s not just a fish but a beast of the deep. They hit hard and make a beeline for their rocky lairs, and you’ve got to lock in and get their head turned – it’s all about strategy, coordination, and a couple of bicep curls in your downtime!
Once you’ve wrestled them away from the bottom, they might switch gears and stutter-step like they’ve lost their motivation. This is the ‘Dead Weight’ phase. You’re literally hauling in a hefty rock, wondering how such a big fish can become so lazy. Watch out, though! As you bring it closer to the boat, they might just float to the top, a bit dazed and confused due to barotrauma. If you’re planning to release, have a release weight handy to give them a fighting chance!
The Culinary Dream
Now, let’s say you’ve done the hard yards and have a beautiful Bar Cod on board. What's next, cook it up, of course! These fish are prized for their mild, firm, and juicy flesh. Don’t overthink it; keep it simple. A bit of seasoning, some butter on the BBQ, and you’re in gastronomic paradise. Pair it with a fresh salad, and you’re looking at a meal worthy of kings!
Never a dull day
One time, weset out on an absolute cracker of a day – perfect conditions, a glass-like ocean, and then BAM! First drop, and we’re on two beautiful specimens. It’s your classic camaraderie moment out there on the water, high-fives all around. Just remember, folks, respect the ocean and only take what you need. These guys are magnificent creatures, and we want to keep the numbers healthy for years to come.
