As the sun rises over the shimmeringwaters of Northeast Victoria, I can’t help but feel the excitement in the air. It’s Murray Cod season, and these remarkable fish have a unique place in my heart as an Australian angler.
The Fascination with Murray Cod
Murray Cod are Australia’s largest native freshwater fish, found exclusively in the Murray–Darling River system. They boast a deep, sturdy body, a broad, scooped head, and an impressive mouth lined with tiny, sandpaper-like teeth, making them both powerful and captivating. Their striking colours range from creamy to olive green, accented with dark blotches—each one an aquatic masterpiece. What adds to their mystique is their longevity; some can live up to 48 years, which makes every encounter feel extraordinary.
Adapting to the Seasons
The fishing season for Murray Cod runs from December 1 to August 31, with a closed period during spawning. I enjoy exploring different techniques throughout the year. Warmer months are perfect for casting large hardbody and surface lures, while cooler weather calls for deeper fishing and bait strategies. My go-to baits include raw chicken and mozzarella cheese, which often tempt these hungry cod.
My Special Home Waters
The waterways of Northeast Victoria’s High Country are more than just a backdrop for fishing; they are personal to me. My family and I have spent over a decade engaged in habitat restoration and fish restocking projects in our local area. The knowledge that we’ve helped improve these waterways adds depth to every fishing trip I take. With breathtaking scenery—rolling hills and clear waters—the experience is enriched even further.
Essential Tackle
When it comes to tackle, I rely on proven gear. For casting big lures, my favourite is the Black Magic spinning rod, especially the Hyperglide, paired with Supple Trace. For bait fishing, I use Black Magic braid on a Snapper Gladius rod, matched with a strong fluorocarbon leader and DX 6/0 or KLT 6/0 hooks.
The thrill of targeting Murray Cod comes from the method of sight-casting in clear water. There’s nothing quite like spotting cod, casting just beyond it, and witnessing its deliberate approach to inhale the lure. I still remember the rush of landing my personal best cod, over 80 cm, using a lure gifted to me for my wedding anniversary—a memory I cherish.
Sharing the Adventure
What I love most about these fishing adventures is sharing them with my family. Our two sons are now passionate anglers, and I treasure the proud photos of their catches just as much as my own. Watching them grow and develop their skills makes the experience even more fulfilling.
Encouragement for Women Anglers
To any women interested in chasing Murray Cod, my advice is straightforward: dive in and give it a go! Utilize the wealth of resources available—videos, online forums, and social media—and don’t hesitate to reach out. While some may keep their secret spots close to the fishing vest, most are willing to share valuable insights on techniques and gear.
Remember, fishing isn’t about brute strength; it’s about patience, learning, and enjoying the journey. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, there’s always something new to discover on the water.
Murray Cod fishing promises challenges, rewards, and countless memories. So, grab your gear and embrace the adventure; nature is calling, and the thrill of the catch awaits you.
